JEFFERSON, Ark. (AP) - Authorities in Jefferson County say they have confiscated 140 dogs, 20 horses and other animals from an animal breeding operation.

Officials say the animals were living in filthy conditions. The Thursday raid also involved cats, rabbits, turtles and exotic birds.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s office says misdemeanor citations were issued to the animals’ owners, James and Tara Best of Jefferson. Sheriff’s Maj. Lafayette Woods says charges could be upgraded to aggravated animal cruelty.

Little Rock television station KTHV reports (https://is.gd/Odkswv ) the animals were taken to a location for veterinary treatment and will be available for adoption later.

Humane Society spokesman Dale Bartlett says some of the dogs were shaking and had heavily matted fur.

Woods says the county hasn’t seen an animal problem on such a large scale before.
