AMITE, La. (AP) - A community group has asked the Tangipahoa Parish School Board to move quickly on a proposal to acquire land next to Independence Middle School to build new facilities for the school.

Larry Holland with the group Concerned Citizens of Independence said the site would be suited for a track, gymnasium or other facilities, The Advocate reported (https://bit.ly/1gConKs) .

“If we let this land get away from us, it’s a shame,” Holland said.

The land is on West Second Street near U.S. Highway 51, just north of the middle school campus.

Board Vice President Brett Duncan said the board voted six months ago to buy the land and is in the process of appraising the site to develop a proper value for the property.

The board has no specific plans for new facilities at the site, he said.

Board President Andy Anderson said anything built on the site would supplement the new middle school facility that opened six years ago.

Schools Superintendent Mark Kolwe said the board should be able to complete a deal soon for the site, though he could not project a timetable.
