HOUSTON (AP) - The Coast Guard has used a helicopter to pull a sick 45-year-old doctor off a Norwegian research vessel that was 190 miles off the coast of Galveston in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Coast Guard says in a statement the man had been experiencing severe chest pains and heart attack symptoms aboard the Veritas Viking. The vessel’s crew called for urgent Coast Guard help at about 2 a.m. Saturday.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter lowered a rescue swimmer more than 20 feet to the ship’s deck. The swimmer and the sick doctor were then hoisted onto the helicopter.

The doctor was transported to the University of Texas Medical Branch for treatment. He is in stable condition.
