Sen Thad Cochran on Thursday released a new television ad that pushes back against the idea that he is a big-government Republican.

“People should have the right to make their own decisions to without unnecessary interference from the government,” Mr. Cochran says in the “Honor” ad in which he speaks directly into the camera. “That is what freedom is all about.”

Mr. Cochran is running for a seventh term in the Senate. He will square off against tea party-backed state Sen. Chris McDaniel in a runoff election Tuesday.

“I am committed to doing what’s best for our state and our nation,” Mr. Cochran says in his new ad. “That is my continued commitment to you.”
