PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Publishing explicit images of someone without their consent would become a crime under legislation to be voted on by the Rhode Island House.
The bill scheduled for a vote Tuesday aims to stamp out the practice commonly referred to as “revenge porn.”
It would make it a felony to post sexually explicit photos of someone without their consent when that person had a “reasonable expectation of privacy.”
Doing so would be a felony punishable by up to three years in prison even if the pictures were originally taken with permission.
The Senate has already passed a companion bill.
“Revenge porn” is generally perpetrated by an ex-partner or a hacker for the purpose of humiliation, or some other malicious intent.
