ABERDEEN, Miss. (AP) - Wildlife officials have released about 54,000 fish into the Buttahatchie River in Monroe County.

WTVA-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1gFlAFk ) the fish are of the Gulf Coast walleye strain.

Fisheries biologist Tyler Stubbs of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks says the department hopes restoration of walleye habitat along the river also will increase the river’s fish population.

The fish were reared at the department’s North Mississippi Fish Hatchery west of Enid.
