PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Senate has approved legislation that would require public school instruction on sexual abuse, abduction and ways to prevent victimization.
Sen. James Doyle’s bill is modeled on “Erin’s Law,” which is named for an Illinois woman who was molested as a girl and now works to raise awareness among children about sexual abuse. She testified earlier this year before the House and Senate judiciary committees.
Several other states have enacted similar laws.
Doyle’s bill would require the state Education Department to develop an age-appropriate program on sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention for students in kindergarten through grade 8. The lessons would be a part of health education classes
A companion bill is pending on the House side.
