MANNS HARBOR, N.C. (AP) - With the arrival of the summer travel season, the North Carolina Department of Transportation is offering some tips on the best times to use the state’s ferries during the busiest tourist time of year.

The most popular ferry is the one running between Hatteras and Ocracoke. Officials say it’s best to arrive at Hatteras before 10am or after 3pm or at Ocracoke’s South Dock before 2pm or after 7pm. The busiest summer days on the Hatteras Inlet route are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

If you’re taking the Southport-Fort Fisher ferry avoid the middle of the day and try to arrive 45 minutes before departure.

The DOT says on the Pamlico and Neuse River Routes its best to avoid rush hours because those ferries have a lot of commuter traffic.
