WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say an armed bandit accidentally fired his gun while stealing about $1,000 from the front desk of a northern New Jersey hotel.

Weehawken police say tell The Jersey Journal (https://bit.ly/1hNb4r3) that the man entered the hotel around 2 a.m. Saturday. He was armed with a black handgun, which discharged while he was pulling phone wires out of a lobby wall with the same hand he was using to hold his gun.

The bullet went into a wall, and officers later recovered a shell casing at the scene.

No injuries were reported.

The stolen money was taken from a cash register at the hotel’s front desk. The man then walked out the front door and left the area.

He remained at large as of Sunday afternoon.
