The start of the Virginia Senate session was marked by the return of Sen. Creigh Deeds less than two months after being stabbed multiple times by his son, who then committed suicide at their Bath County home.

Deeds, whose face bore scars from the attack, has pledged to work to improve the state’s mental health services.

Gus Deeds had been released from emergency custody hours before he attacked his father because the local community services board said it was unable to locate an available psychiatric bed in the area.
