LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Police say in southern New Mexico say a tractor-trailer hit and killed two people on the shoulder of Interstate 10 near Lordsburg.

Authorities say the rig was traveling east on I-10 early Thursday when it veered onto the right shoulder of the highway and crashed into two people who were standing outside a pickup truck.

Both people were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities were being withheld until family could be notified.

The truck driver was hospitalized with chest pains.
