OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Volunteers are fanning out across Oklahoma City on Thursday to try to count how many individuals and families are homeless.

The annual survey is part of a nationwide count to gage homeless levels.

In Oklahoma City, the Homeless Alliance, the Coalition to End Poverty and the city of Oklahoma City will coordinate volunteers who will head to homeless shelters, encampments and hot meal programs.

Homeless Alliance executive director Dan Straughan says the homeless population is difficult to count accurately, but the results help because the community can better plan for the needs of those less fortunate.

Oklahoma City had 1,362 homeless individuals during the 2013 count. It’s estimated that a community’s annual number of homeless people is actually four to five times higher than its one-night census.
