ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) - The attorney for a Roseburg man convicted of sexually abusing a girl says a 25-year sentence recommended by prosecutors would be too harsh and “shock the conscience” of the court.
Defense attorney Brook Reinhard argued for a 75-month sentence at a hearing before a Douglas County judge, saying Aaron Cripe has no prior convictions.
Because the victim was younger than 12 when some of the abuse took place, prosecutor Steve Hoddle contends the 27-year-old qualifies to be sentenced to 25 years under what’s known as Jessica’s Law.
The Roseburg News-Review (https://is.gd/FmtcoN ) reports the girl’s parents spoke at Wednesday’s hearing, telling Judge George Ambrosini the family’s lives were forever changed. The father said Cripe was his best friend before betraying his trust.
The judge said he needed time to consider the appropriate sentence.
