MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Senate has voted to make bestiality a crime.

Alabama currently has no law specifically addressing bestiality. The Senate voted 20-1 Thursday to create the crime of bestiality for having sexual contact with an animal. The offense would be a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail.

The bill sponsored by Republican Sen. Tom Whatley of Auburn now goes to the House for consideration.
