MOORE, Okla. (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a former resident of Moore has pleaded guilty to improperly receiving about $8,000 in benefits after last year’s killer tornado at Moore.
U.S. Attorney Sanford Coats said Wednesday that 42-year-old Ira Robert Schilling pleaded guilty to committing disaster-benefits fraud through the Air Force’s Safe Haven program.
Prosecutors say Schilling signed a document saying he evacuated and was residing at a Safe Haven location in Norman. In court Wednesday, he said his declaration was false and that, because of it, the Air Force paid him money.
Sentencing will be held in about three months. Schilling faces up to 30 years in prison and a quarter-million-dollar fine, though under federal sentencing guidelines the amount would be much lower.
The storm killed two dozen people.
