NEW YORK (AP) - Police have arrested a suspect in the beating of a journalist on a New York City street.

Leighton Jennings was arrested at a residence in Queens late Tuesday. He was awaiting arraignment Wednesday in Manhattan. The name of his attorney was not immediately known.

The hate crimes task force has determined that the attack was not a bias incident. The victim is gay. His wallet, phone and gold necklace were not taken.

Randy Gener (JEHN’-ur) was walking home on Jan. 17 when he was viciously punched in the face on West 54th Street.

He has undergone brain surgery and relatives say he remembers little about the attack.

Gener has done freelance work for The New York Times and the Miami Herald.
