VERNON, Vt. (AP) - Seven months after the Vermont Supreme Court ruled that the Vernon police chief was wrongfully terminated, he and the town have reached a settlement letting him return to work as a part-time corporal.
The Brattleboro Reformer reports (https://bit.ly/1bI41RH) the dispute dates back to October 2009, when Police Chief Kevin Turnley said he had no prior knowledge of a sex offender moving into town. An email from the state contradicted the claim, and Turnley was fired. He challenged the decision.
The state Supreme Court ruled in June there was no evidence Turnley intentionally tried to mislead the selectboard.
The case was sent back to the town and went to mediation. Turnley was rehired to work 20 hours per week. Terms regarding back pay and damages have been kept confidential.
