PASSAIC, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a man armed with a knife was fatally shot by police at a senior citizen apartment complex in northern New Jersey.

Passaic County prosecutors tell The Record (https://bit.ly/1e87hqK) that Michael Gabriele was shot once around 10:20 p.m. Tuesday after he charged at officers who had responded to a disturbance inside the complex. He died a short time later at a hospital.

Prosecutors said Gabriele was arguing with his mother in the Joseph R. Brestel Residence complex, where she lives. When two Passaic officers arrived there, Gabriele allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife.

After refusing the officers’ commands to drop the knife, Gabriele charged at them and one officer fired a shot.

The shooting will be reviewed by the prosecutor’s office, which is standard policy in police-involved shootings.
