NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - State highway officials say they’ll wait until July to award a contract to replace the Broadway Bridge connecting Little Rock and North Little Rock.

The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department originally planned to award the contract next month, with the current bridge being taken out of service as early as September. But highway officials said Tuesday that the schedule has been pushed back by several months.

About 24,000 motorists use the Broadway Bridge every day, and they’ll have to find an alternate route across the river while the new bridge is being constructed. Two other bridges downtown can be used to cross the Arkansas River.

Highway officials tell the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (https://bit.ly/Mu1n7U ) that the delay will give contractors more time to come up with innovative ideas for the project.
