PITTSFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A former counselor at a Stockbridge elementary school who had been charged with sexually assaulting five young girls has been acquitted of all charges.

Scott Muir was found not guilty Tuesday by a Berkshire Superior Court jury of 19 counts, including child rape.

Prosecutors allege the 39-year-old Muir assaulted the girls between the ages of 8 and 10 from 2003 until 2006 when he worked as a student support center coordinator at the Stockbridge Plain School.

Muir took the stand in own defense.

The Berkshire Eagle (https://bit.ly/1dNiHu1 ) reports that Muir’s lawyer told the jury that even though his client worked in a crowded, well-traveled area of the school, no one witnessed the alleged assaults and the girls’ versions of events were inconsistent.

The prosecutor refused comment on the verdict.
