SPARTA, Ky. (AP) - A one-year-old boy has died in a fire in a northern Kentucky home.
Gallatin County Sheriff Josh Neale told The Kentucky Enquirer (https://bit.ly/1fwwXds) that the 23-month-old child died in the blaze, which was reported Tuesday afternoon.
Neale says the boy’s mother was able to climb out of a window with an older child, but was not able to save the younger one.
“The mother was able to get her oldest child, who was 3, out,” Neale said. “The youngest child, his bedroom was at the far end of the house, and she was not able to get back into that bedroom due to the severity of the fire.”
Neale said the older child had soot on him from the smoke and the mother cut her wrist while climbing out of the home, but neither suffered serious injury.
The child’s father was at a neighbor’s home at the time of the blaze.
No names were immediately released. An investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing, but Neale said it appeared to start near the home’s furnace.
“We are currently working on a joint investigation with the Kentucky State Fire Marshal’s Office,” Neale said.
