FLORIDA GOVERNOR OUTLINES SPENDING PLAN FOR 2014
Florida Gov. Rick Scott rolled out an election-year budget that calls for increased spending on schools, the environment, and child protection while cutting some $600 million in taxes. The $74 billion spending plan is a framework for a final budget that will be passed during the annual Legislative session that begins in March.
NEW AIRLINE, FAMILIAR NAME TO LAUNCH IN MIAMI
An airline with a familiar name is looking to fly out of South Florida again. Eastern Air Lines Group announced Tuesday it has taken the first steps to launch later this year in Miami. Eastern Airline was headquartered in Miami before it went out of business in 1991.
WINTER STORM BEARS DOWN ON PANHANDLE
Residents in the western Panhandle awoke to a layer of ice and dusting of snow early Wednesday, something the region hasn’t seen in years. Sporadic power outages were reported throughout the area because of iced power lines. Numerous bridges were closed overnight Tuesday through Wednesday morning.
DEPUTY SAVES MAN FROM BURNING BUILDING
A sheriff’s deputy is being credited for saving a man from a burning mobile home. Deputy James Devorak was the first emergency responder to arrive at the fire on Tuesday night. He heard moaning from inside the home and despite the lanai being fully engulfed in flames, was able to pull a man to safety.
COAST GUARD SEARCHES FOR MISSING CRUISE SHIP COOK
The Coast Guard is searching for a cruise ship cook who went overboard in the Caribbean Sea. Officials say Inyoman Bagiada of Indonesia fell overboard early Wednesday near the Yucatan Channel. Bagiada was a cook aboard the Celebrity Constellation. A cruise line spokeswoman says the Coast Guard was notified that a person had gone overboard when a pair of shoes were found next to an outdoor pool deck railing.
