SEDONA, Ariz. (AP) - A group of people working to keep Oak Creek Canyon free of pollution has been awarded a grant to aid its efforts.
The nearly $166,000 grant to the Oak Creek Watershed Council comes from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.
The water problems in northern Arizona’s Oak Creek Canyon largely are due to improper trash disposal and human waste. The amount of E.coli bacteria in Oak Creek has reached 500 times what the state says is acceptable in the past.
The watershed council will use the money to send two-person teams into Oak Creek Canyon to educate tourists on keeping the popular recreation area clean. The money also will help middle school students learn about protecting the environment from animal waste.
