CINCINNATI (AP) - A court appearance by an Ohio man who fatally shot his girlfriend was marred by a courtroom brawl that injured a sheriff’s deputy.
The Cincinnati Enquirer (https://cin.ci/MoXfWN ) reports that it happened Monday as Leonard Lanier was preparing to plead guilty to the slaying last year of Strawberry Edwards.
Authorities said the courtroom erupted when Lanier’s brother and a relative of Edwards began fighting. A prosecutor had her glasses broken and a deputy sheriff suffered a broken finger.
Both brawlers were found to be in contempt of court and were jailed.
When order was restored, 28-year-old Leonard Lanier pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of manslaughter and was sentenced to 28 years in prison.
