GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - Investigators say a space heater appears to be the cause of an early morning fire that left a family of 5 homeless.

Fire Battalion Chief Ken Payne of the Gulfport Fire Department tells WLOX-TV (https://bit.ly/1iE8Q1t ) that the heater, placed close to curtains in the home, is the likely cause of the fire that broke out Monday around 3 a.m.

Payne says the 5 people in the house on 23rd Avenue escaped unhurt.

The Red Cross is assisting the family.
