A vial containing late Pope John Paul II’s blood was stolen from the Church of San Pietro della Ienca east of Rome on Saturday, police said.

Custodian Franca Corrieri said she discovered a broken window early Sunday morning and called the police. Italian authorities discovered the gold relic and a crucifix missing, Reuters reported.

The theft sparked a major search involving sniffer dogs and more than 50 policemen, The Independent said.

The vial is one of only three relics containing the blood of the late Polish pope, who is due to become a saint in April, making the relic more valuable.

Police said it’s possible the thieves plan to use the blood for Satanic rites, NBC News reported.
