MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (AP) - A memorial is being postponed by winter weather for the school bus driver slain one year ago during a bunker standoff in southeast Alabama.

The event honoring 66-year-old Charles Poland Jr. was originally scheduled for Wednesday at Dale County High School in Midland City, a few miles from the scene of the hostage drama. But officials said the onset of bad weather in Alabama has prompted them to reschedule the memorial for Feb. 5.

A gunman boarded Poland’s bus Jan. 29, 2013, demanding children.

Poland was shot dead after refusing the demand. He’s been hailed as a hero.

But Jimmy Lee Dykes grabbed then-5-year-old Ethan Gilman off the bus and held him in an underground bunker for six days before FBI agents stormed the shelter and killed Dykes.
