PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - Ingalls Shipbuilding has given $107,000 to schools in Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana for science, engineering and math projects.

Ingalls President Irwin Edenzon says handing out checks made him feel a bit like Santa Claus.

He told teachers and administrators during Friday’s presentation that Ingalls was investing in people. He says some of them may come to work at the shipyard someday.

In all, 25 grants were distributed by Edenzon.

He says the shipbuilder is especially interested in students being able to read by third grade and in rich STEM-related coursework in higher grades.

Edenzon says the projects will help foster student interest in STEM careers and hopefully in Ingalls.
