CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Public Schools will be closed for a second day this week as subzero temperatures move into northern Illinois.
CPS called off school on Monday. School officials announced Monday afternoon that there also will be no classes on Tuesday. The decision affects about 400,000 students in the nation’s third-largest school district.
The National Weather Service says temperatures overnight Monday into Tuesday could dip as low as 23 below zero with wind chills of between 30 and 40 below zero.
Chicago schools also canceled classes earlier this month when a deep freeze settled across much of the country with temperatures and wind chills below zero. This time district officials say classes must be called off because it is “dangerous for children and families getting to and from school.”
