SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Workers who give facials or use specific skin care devices such as steamers and LED lights would be classified as estheticians who are subject to California training regulations under legislation approved by the state Assembly.
Lawmakers approved AB1153 by Democrat Susan Eggman of Stockton on a 68-0 vote Monday.
The bill also adds a new category of license for so-called master estheticians, who would need 1,200 hours of skin care training to qualify. That is double the time needed for a standard esthetician’s license.
Eggman’s bill would prohibit anyone who is not licensed by the state from identifying themselves as an esthetician and bar people licensed in barbering, cosmetology, skin care, nail care and electrolysis from diagnosing injury, illness or disease.
The bill now heads to the Senate.
