Six children were killed in rural Pakistan on Sunday when a hand grenade they mistook for a toy exploded, police said.
The children, aged 7 to 12, were playing in a field near their house in the town of Hangu when the grenade exploded, local police chief Iftikhar Ahmed said, according to Sky News.
“Five boys and one girl were killed in the blast. One other child was injured,” he said.
The children belong to two families displaced from a nearby tribal region, Orakzai, Hangu police told CNN.
Hangu is regularly targeted by militants. Just this month, a teenage boy from a nearby village was killed trying to save his friends from a suicide bomber at the entrance of their school.
