AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine lawmakers are examining bills next week aimed at tackling the problem of mounting student debt.
Under a bill introduced by Assistant Senate Republican Leader Roger Katz, the University of Maine and Community College systems would study a pilot program being developed in Oregon that makes college tuition free for students who agree to pay back the state after they graduate and get a job.
Senate President Justin Alfond’s bill would have the state develop a college affordability strategy by examining the Oregon model and other ideas, like low interest rates for state-issued student loans if students do well in school or agree to work in public service after graduation.
The Education and Cultural Affairs Committee will hold a hearing on the bills Wednesday.
