CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A roundup of cormorants is scheduled for next month on Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie.

This time of year, the snaky necked birds descend by the thousands to feast on fish like shad and herring. The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (https://bit.ly/1bqBmvD ) Sunday that anglers and state legislators have been pushing for the two-month removal hunt that’s scheduled to start Feb. 2.

More than 800 people have qualified to hunt the birds, taking part in training that includes warnings not to mistakenly shoot other similar-looking, protected species or face arrest.

The state Department of Natural Resources can stop the event at any time. Avian conservationists oppose the hunt, saying state officials were pressured into holding it.
