PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Legislation proposed in Rhode Island’s General Assembly would require schools to teach children about sex abuse and ways to prevent being victimized.
The bill is sponsored by state Sen. James Doyle and House Rep. Raymond Johnston, both Pawtucket Democrats. It’s modeled on a law called Erin’s Law that has been adopted in several states. It’s named after a woman who was molested as a girl growing up in Illinois and who now works to fight the sexual abuse of children.
The proposal would require state education officials to come up with age-appropriate classroom lessons designed to help children recognize the warning signs of sexual abuse and ways they can get help. The lessons would be a part of health education classes.
