JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi Supreme Court declined Thursday to hear an appeal from a Copiah County man convicted in the 2010 fatal shooting of his stepfather.

The state Court of Appeals had upheld Justin Barron’s murder conviction and life sentence last year.

Court records show Barron was convicted in the shooting death of his stepfather Matthew Miller Sr. at the family’s home in Wesson.

Barron had argued he acted in self-defense during a violent domestic dispute between Miller and Miller’s wife, who is Barron’s mother.

The Appeals Court says the Copiah County jury found Barron did not act in the heat of passion or in self-defense, but deliberately shot Miller twice in the back at close range. The court says the evidence was sufficient to support the guilty verdict.
