VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - Most of the Ventura pier has been temporarily closed after a support beam gave way and one of its pilings was found to be damaged.
City official Lysa Urban tells the Ventura County Star (https://bit.ly/1ju2Zfg ) that a group of city employees were on the pier on Friday afternoon when the beam gave way.
The outer two-thirds of the pier was cleared of people and closed.
The beam is expected to be replaced and the pier will get a closer inspection from city workers on Saturday.
It’s not clear what caused the damage, though especially high tides have been hitting it this week.
The 1,700-foot pier was rebuilt in 1917 after a ship severed the previous one in 1914.
