HUNTLEY, Ill. (AP) - A McHenry County judge has sentenced a suburban Chicago man to 40 years in prison in his girlfriend’s beating death.

The judge sentenced 45-year-old Robert Signorile on Friday. The Daily Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1jLFs7o) that Signorile said he was innocent during the hearing and his public defender filed an appeal.

Signorile faced up to 60 years in prison for the 2012 death of 52-year-old Michelle Mathieu in their Huntley home. Mathieu was hospitalized after the beating and died six days later.

Signorile says he loved Mathieu and will fight to prove his innocence. Jurors convicted him in November.
