LOS ANGELES (AP) - Authorities say five members of a family, including three children, were rushed to a hospital after being struck by a car driven by an elderly man near a Los Angeles elementary school.

Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott says the crash happened shortly after 8 a.m. Friday across from Yorkdale Elementary in the Highland Park neighborhood.

KABC-TV reports two of the patients are in critical condition - a 7-year-old girl and the child’s 52-year-old grandmother.

A 32-year-old woman and the other two children received minor injuries.

Police Capt. Jennifer Thomas says the driver of the car, an 87-year-old man, ran a stop sign before hitting the pedestrians. The driver stopped after the incident and spoke with detectives.
