PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a 22-year-old man remains hospitalized in guarded condition after being shot by a female sheriff’s deputy while trying to escape from a crime scene in suburban Rochester.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office tells media outlets Thursday that Vincenzo Zagari of Ogden was suspected of shoplifting Wednesday at a Pittsford Wegmans and was driving off in a stolen vehicle when he hit a parked car. Authorities say he tried to carjack a vehicle at gunpoint before running across the road to a bank.
Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn says the deputy shot Zagari in the chest when he showed a weapon.
Zagari faces charges including larceny, possession of a stolen vehicle and attempted aggravated assault against a police officer.
He’s on probation for assault related to a 2012 shooting in Wheatland.
