ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A Corrales man with 13 prior felony convictions has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for unlawful possession of a firearm.

Prosecutors say 55-year-old Walter Lee Deiter also was sentenced Thursday to five years of supervised release.

Acting U.S. Attorney Steven C. Yarbrough says Deiter was prosecuted as part of a federal anti-violence initiative that targets “the worst of the worst” offenders.

Deiter was indicted in March 2010 for unlawfully possessing a firearm and ammunition in New Mexico’s Bernalillo County in November 2009.

At the time of his arrest, Deiter was on supervised release after having served a 46-month prison sentence for his first federal conviction.

Deiter previously was convicted of burglary, grand theft, drug trafficking and bank robbery in Florida and drug trafficking in Oklahoma.
