EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Officials have signed a formal agreement allowing the move of several war memorials scattered around Evansville’s downtown to a single site on the city’s riverfront.

The agreement with Vanderburgh County commissioners gives the local veterans council permission to move a Civil War bench and World War I and World War II monuments which now surround the old county courthouse.

Commissioner Steve Melcher tells the Evansville Courier & Press (https://bit.ly/1aO5OQg ) that work is expected to begin on moving the monuments once weather permits this spring.

Veterans council leaders say more people will see the memorials in a single location. City-owned Revolutionary War and Desert Storm monuments also are being moved.

The site along the Ohio River will incorporate the existing Korean War, Vietnam War and Purple Heart monuments.
