BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The University of Vermont says its rate of applications from potential undergraduate students has risen 9 percent from last year.

The school says as of Friday it had received 23,936 applications for enrollment this coming fall.

Applications rose for Vermont students by 3 percent despite declining numbers of high school graduates and were up 4.6 percent from New England applicants.

But UVM officials told the Burlington Free Press (https://bfpne.ws/1g1ssfK ) that greatest percentage increases were in what they called “emerging markets for UVM,” including applications from North Carolina, which rose 141 percent, Texas, Maryland, Virginia, Washington State and Pennsylvania.

Admissions Director Beth Wiser attributed the rise to “restrained tuition growth and expanded outreach to students by the admissions staff and alumni,” and “word of mouth.”
