CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) - After more than two months of sometimes contentious debate, the St. Louis County Council has adopted a policy that seeks to make it easier to bike and walk along county roadways.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1eyiXAK ) reports that the council voted 5-1 with one abstention on Tuesday to approve the Complete Streets proposal. It was the third version of the legislation meant to align the county with a national movement to improve street access for bicyclists and pedestrians.

The county highway department raised concerns when the idea was first introduced late last year. The agency said it would be costly to add sometimes unnecessary bike lanes to the county road system.
