KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) - Skype co-founder Niklas Zennstrom, skippering the Swedish-flagged vessel Ran, has taken a slight lead in the 52 class at the Quantum Key West 2014 sailing regatta off the Florida Keys.
Zennstrom and tactician Adrian Stead lead their crew to fourth-, first- and second-place finishes during three races staged Wednesday.
Last year’s 52 class winner, Azzurra, the Italian-flagged boat co-owned by pharmaceutical mogul Pablo Roemmer, is in second place, one point behind Zennstrom.
A snagged lobster trap line foiled Amway President Doug DeVos’ opportunity to win a fourth consecutive race Wednesday. Instead, Quantum Racing finished last and slipped to third place in the series, five points behind Zennstrom.
With three first-place finishes Wednesday, Hap Fauth has American-flagged Bella Mente one point ahead of Alex Schaerer’s Caol Ila R in the Mini Maxi class.
