QUINCY, Ill. (AP) - The Quincy City Council has approved money to pay to clear the site of a fire that destroyed a historic downtown hotel last year.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reports (https://bit.ly/1bjcV3e) that council members on Tuesday approved more than $440,000 for the project. Crews are expected to start clearing the Newcomb Hotel property in mid-February.

Spring Grove contractors BSB Development Inc. won the contract for the project. The company says it won’t charge the city to salvage certain architectural features of the former hotel. Those include the dedication plaque and Corinthian columns.

The hotel opened in 1888 but has been empty for years. It was destroyed in a five-alarm blaze on Sept. 6.
