PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The group Environment Rhode Island is urging state lawmakers in the Ocean State to ban plastic shopping bags.

The group delivered a petition to lawmakers Wednesday that has 10,000 signatures from supporters of a ban.

Legislation to prohibit grocery stores and other retailers from giving away plastic shopping bags is expected to be introduced this week in the General Assembly. Similar legislation failed to get a vote last year.

Several cities around the nation already ban the ubiquitous plastic bags- including Los Angeles, Seattle and Barrington, R.I.

Supporters of a ban say the bags end up littering neighborhoods, parks and roads and often end up threatening wildlife and the environment in Narragansett Bay.
