PHOENIX (AP) - An El Mirage man is in custody for alleged child abuse involving his 7-year-old son and his girlfriend’s 9-year-old daughter.

Henry Legg had his initial court appearance Wednesday in Maricopa County Superior Court.

He was released on his own recognizance and has a Feb. 5 status conference and Feb. 11 preliminary hearing.

Legg doesn’t have a lawyer yet.

Court records show Legg’s girlfriend is the mother of both children.

She told El Mirage police that she saw Legg strike her daughter on her backside and upper thighs with a leather belt Friday.

Legg allegedly threw a table spoon at his young son on Sunday and it reportedly hit the child in the right eyebrow, causing a cut and swelling.

Court records show Legg works for the Dysart Unified School District.
