DENVER (AP) - Colorado lawmakers are considering increasing funds for the development of more affordable housing in the aftermath of flooding and wildfires last year.
A House committee gave the bill its first approval after a hearing Wednesday. The bill would pay for the construction of up to 800 affordable housing units. The proposal would also allow the state to use a portion of a grant fund for temporary housing and foreclosure prevention.
Democratic Rep. Crisanta Duran, one of the bill sponsors, says the total cost to the state would be about $5 million.
Lawmakers say there’s an increased need for affordable housing because of historic flooding and wildfires last year.
The proposal still needs to be voted by another committee and the full House.
