MESA, Ariz. (AP) - A man is in custody following a police chase in Mesa that involved an officer being struck by a fleeing vehicle.
Police say an officer making the traffic stop about 5 a.m. Tuesday suffered minor injuries when he was struck as he approached a truck.
The truck rolled on its side when the driver took a corner too fast in a nearby neighborhood.
Police say 57-year-old Rogelio Vargas is being held Vargas on suspicion of aggravated assault on a police officer and unlawful flight.
They also say drug charges likely will follow pending toxicology results.
While at a hospital, police say Vargas told them he couldn’t remember what happened because he had used a large amount of illegal drugs the night prior.
Police say Vargas has prior arrests involving drugs.
