EVERETT, Wash. (AP) - Democratic Rep. Marko Liias has been appointed to the state Senate, replacing Paul Shinn, who left office for health reasons.

The Snohomish County Council made the appointment for the 21st Legislative District seat Tuesday. The Council also appointed Lillian Ortiz-Self to take Liias’ spot in the House.

Liias and Ortiz-Self will serve the district which encompasses Edmonds, Lynnwood and southern portions of Everett. Their appointments are good through the November election, and both intend to run for full terms.
